Best Apps for Driving in Iceland 2026: Vedur, Road.is, 112 & More

The right app can save your trip in Iceland. Here are the apps Icelandic drivers use daily — and that travellers should install before they reach the airport.

1. Vedur — The weather forecast that matters

The Icelandic Meteorological Office provides the most accurate forecasts in the country. App: Veður (available on both App Store and Google Play). You can check:

  • Weather forecasts by region and road
  • Northern Lights (aurora) forecast
  • Sea ice movement warnings
  • Wind direction and speed by the hour

Use en.vedur.is/weather/forecasts/aurora for the English aurora forecast.

2. Road.is — Real-time road conditions

The Icelandic Road Administration runs road.is, showing road conditions across Iceland's highway network. You can see:

  • Closed / open / restricted access per road
  • F-road status updates (generally open from June)
  • Snow and ice locations

App: Vegagerðin. This is a mandatory app for anyone driving Iceland in winter.

3. Safetravel.is — Trip registration

Safetravel.is lets you register your travel plan before heading into mountainous or remote areas. If you don't return by a set time, search and rescue teams are notified. This isn't just for hiking — any trip on F-roads or in winter conditions should be registered.

4. Google Maps — useful but with caveats

Google Maps is helpful but has two limitations in Iceland:

  • It doesn't know road conditions (open/closed)
  • It sometimes suggests routes on unofficial tracks

Use Google Maps for basic navigation, but always check road.is first.

5. 112 Iceland — Emergency SOS

App from Icelandic rescue services. Lets you send your GPS location directly to search and rescue with a single button. If you're stuck in snow or injured on a remote road, this is life-saving.

6. Bonus: Fuel prices at key stations

The app Gasvaktin shows a fuel price comparison at major stations in Reykjavík. Outside the capital area, prices are fixed — N1 and Orkan charge the same nationwide.

Summary: What apps should be on your phone?

  • ✅ Veður (vedur.is) — weather and aurora forecast
  • ✅ Vegagerðin (road.is) — road conditions
  • ✅ Safetravel — trip registration
  • ✅ 112 Iceland — emergency GPS
  • ✅ Google Maps — navigation (with caution)
