Iceland Motorhome & RV Rental Guide 2026: Costs, Rules and Campsites

A motorhome or campervan road trip is one of the most popular ways to explore Iceland. With the right preparation, it gives you unmatched flexibility — wake up at Jökulsárlón, drive to Skaftafell, and sleep under the stars. But Iceland's motorhome rental market has specific rules and costs that differ significantly from mainland Europe.

Motorhome vs campervan — what is the difference in Iceland?

In the Icelandic rental market:

  • Campervan: Typically a converted Toyota HiAce or similar van. Sleeping for 2. Budget option. No bathroom on board.
  • Motorhome / RV: A purpose-built vehicle with cooking facilities, toilet, shower, and sleeping for 4–6. More expensive but more self-contained.
  • 4WD camper: A 4-wheel-drive vehicle (often a Land Cruiser or similar) with a roof tent or rear sleeping platform. Best for F-road access.

Cost of renting a motorhome in Iceland

Prices vary significantly by season and vehicle class. Approximate daily rates in 2026:

  • Budget campervan (2 berth, no bathroom): 120–180 EUR/day in peak season (June–August)
  • Standard motorhome (4 berth, with bathroom): 200–350 EUR/day in peak season
  • Large RV (6 berth): 350–550 EUR/day in peak season
  • Off-season rates (October–April): 40–60% lower than peak season

Additional costs to budget for:

  • Insurance upgrades (SCDW, gravel and ash protection): 20–50 EUR/day
  • Campsite fees: 1,800–3,500 ISK per person per night (approximately 12–25 EUR)
  • Fuel: Motorhomes consume 10–15 L/100km. At ~230 ISK/litre (diesel), budget accordingly.
  • Dump station fees (grey water / waste tank): Typically included with campsite fees

Where can you park and sleep overnight?

This is the question that surprises most first-time Iceland motorhome travellers. Wild camping in motorhomes is heavily restricted in Iceland.

  • Organised campsites: The primary legal option. Iceland has over 170 campsites, most open from June to September. A smaller number are open year-round near Reykjavík.
  • Designated motorhome areas: Some towns have specific motorhome stops (sæti) with electrical hookups and dump stations.
  • Roadside camping with landowner permission: Technically possible outside marked conservation areas, but finding and obtaining permission is difficult in practice.
  • National parks and nature reserves: No camping outside designated campsite areas. Fines apply.

The Campsite and Caravan Pass (marketed as the "Camping Card") costs around 20,500 ISK for 28 nights at participating sites — good value if you plan to camp extensively.

Road restrictions for motorhomes

  • F-roads (Highland roads): Most F-roads are restricted to vehicles under 3.5 tonnes total weight. A loaded large motorhome or RV typically exceeds this. Check the weight limit of your specific vehicle and the F-road you plan to use. Fines for using F-roads without appropriate vehicles are significant.
  • Height restrictions: Some tunnels (including the Hvalfjarðargöng tunnel) have height restrictions. Verify clearance for your vehicle.
  • Single-lane bridges: The Ring Road has hundreds of single-lane bridges. Large motorhomes require careful positioning. Always yield and take it slow.
  • Gravel roads: Check your insurance policy for gravel road coverage — some policies exclude damage from loose gravel (stone chips, windscreen cracks).

Age and licence requirements

Most Icelandic motorhome rental companies require drivers to be:

  • At least 23 years old (sometimes 25 for large RVs)
  • Holding a valid driving licence for at least 2 years
  • In possession of a credit card for the security deposit (typically 500–1,500 EUR)

Top motorhome rental companies in Iceland

  • Happy Campers — Large fleet, good budget options, Reykjavík pickup
  • Cozy Campers — Popular for converted vans and small campervans
  • Campervan Iceland — Mid-range motorhomes, good customer reviews
  • Arctic Motorhome — Larger RVs and full motorhomes for family groups

Summary

Renting a motorhome in Iceland costs 120–550 EUR/day depending on the vehicle class and season, with significant additional costs for campsites, insurance, and fuel. Wild camping is restricted — plan your nights at organised campsites. Large RVs are not suitable for F-roads. Book well in advance for June–August travel, as the best vehicles sell out months ahead.
