Best Self-Drive Day Trips from Reykjavík: Golden Circle, South Coast & More

Reykjavík is the best base for self-drive day trips around Iceland. Within one hour you can reach Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss. Within two hours you're at the black sand beach in Vík. Here are the best car day trips — with realistic time estimates.

Day Trip 1: The Golden Circle (270 km, 8–10 hours)

The classic route. Iceland's three most famous natural landmarks:

  • Þingvellir National Park (45 min from Reykjavík) — Tectonic plate boundary. Gorge. Medieval parliament site.
  • Geysir (90 min from Reykjavík) — Strokkur erupts every 6–8 minutes.
  • Gullfoss (10 min from Geysir) — Two-tier waterfall on the Hvítá river.

Leave at 8–9am. Spend 1–1.5 hours at each stop. Have dinner in Selfoss or on the way home.

Day Trip 2: South Coast and Vík (320 km, 9–11 hours)

The most scenic day trip along the south coast:

  • Seljalandsfoss (2 hours from Reykjavík) — The waterfall you can walk behind.
  • Skógafoss (30 min further east) — 60-metre waterfall with rainbows on sunny days.
  • Reynisfjara (1 hour further east) — Black sand, basalt columns, high waves. Never turn your back on the ocean here.
  • Vík — Small village. Coffee and food.

Day Trip 3: Snæfellsnes Peninsula (350 km, 10–12 hours)

The most memorable day trip on the western side:

  • Búðir — Black church by the shore.
  • Arnarstapi and Hellnar — Coastal trail along dramatic cliff formations.
  • Snæfellsjökull — The glacier Jules Verne sent his characters into. Visible from the road.
  • Stykkishólmur — Small fishing town on the way home.

Day Trip 4: Reykjanes Peninsula (180 km, 5–6 hours)

The shortest day trip — perfect for a second day or morning outing:

  • Blue Lagoon (45 min from Reykjavík) — The famous geothermal spa. Book well in advance.
  • Grindavík — Fishing village near the Reykjanes volcanic activity. Check eruption status before visiting.
  • Garðskagaviti lighthouse — Old lighthouse. Great spot for birdwatching and sea views.

General tips for day trips

  • Always leave early — car parks at popular spots fill by midday.
  • Keep your tank full — petrol stations are noticeably rare on some routes.
  • Check the weather forecast and road.is before you leave.
  • Speed limits in Iceland: 90 km/h on highways, 50 km/h in built-up areas.
