Book 3-4 Months Before Summer — Or Pay Double

Iceland's rental car market follows a brutal supply-and-demand curve. Between June and August, demand from over a million tourists collides with a limited fleet — Iceland simply does not have enough rental vehicles for peak season. The result: prices double or triple compared to winter rates, and the best vehicles (4WD SUVs) sell out entirely.

January-March: Cheapest

Average daily rate for a small car (Yaris/i10): 4,000-6,000 ISK. A 4WD SUV (RAV4, Tucson): 8,000-12,000 ISK. Winter is the cheapest time to rent, but you need winter driving experience and must have winter tires (mandatory by law). Availability is good — you can book a week before and still find competitive rates.

April-May: Shoulder Season

Prices begin to rise. Small car: 6,000-9,000 ISK/day. 4WD: 12,000-16,000 ISK/day. This is a good time for value — roads are improving, daylight is increasing, and you avoid the summer crush. Book 4-6 weeks ahead for the best selection.

June-August: Peak Season

This is where prices go vertical. Small car: 10,000-18,000 ISK/day. 4WD SUV: 18,000-35,000 ISK/day. Campervans: 25,000-50,000 ISK/day. And these are if you book early. Last-minute summer bookings (less than 2 weeks before) can cost 50-100% more, and 4WDs may be unavailable at any price.

The booking window: For the best summer rates, book 3-4 months in advance. For July specifically (the most popular month), 4-6 months is safer. If you want a specific vehicle type (campervan, Super Jeep), book as soon as your flights are confirmed.

September-October: Shoulder Season

Prices drop rapidly after August. Small car: 5,000-8,000 ISK/day. 4WD: 10,000-15,000 ISK/day. September is arguably the best value month for Iceland — autumn colours, northern lights starting, lower prices, and F-roads still open in early September. Book 2-4 weeks ahead.

November-December: Off-Season

Back to winter pricing. Small car: 4,000-7,000 ISK/day. 4WD: 8,000-13,000 ISK/day. Good availability. Northern lights season in full swing. December has very limited daylight (4-5 hours) but offers unique winter driving experiences.
