What does it cost to own a car in Iceland?

Car ownership costs in Iceland are among the highest in Europe. New cars attract a high vehicle registration tax on top of VAT. Used car prices remain elevated due to high import costs and a relatively small domestic market. Fuel (petrol and diesel) is more expensive than many neighbouring countries, though EV running costs are comparatively low thanks to cheap electricity.

Mandatory third-party insurance (ábyrgðartrygging) is required for all vehicles. Comprehensive insurance (allsherjar trygging) is strongly recommended given Iceland's road and weather conditions — ice, gravel roads, river crossings in highland areas, and sudden weather changes can all result in vehicle damage.

Registration tax (gjald) in Iceland

Iceland's annual vehicle registration tax (þungaskattur / gjald) is levied on all registered vehicles. The amount depends on vehicle weight, fuel type, and CO2 emissions. EVs and smaller petrol cars typically pay less than heavier diesel vehicles. Tax bills are issued by Samgöngustofa (the Icelandic Transport Authority) and are due annually. This calculator defaults to 45,000 ISK per year as an approximate mid-range estimate — adjust to your actual bill.

Car maintenance costs in Iceland

Labour rates at Icelandic garages are high. A basic service (oil, filters, brake inspection) typically costs 20,000–40,000 ISK. Winter tyre changes, mandatory by law between November and April on non-studded roads, add to annual costs. Older vehicles naturally require more maintenance — this calculator adjusts the default maintenance estimate based on car age.
