Parking in Reykjavík: The Complete Guide

Reykjavík's parking system is more structured than it appears to first-time visitors, and fines for violations are reliably enforced. Understanding the zone system, payment methods, and time limits will save you significant money and frustration during any stay in the capital.

The Parking Zone System

Central Reykjavík uses a color-coded zone system managed by the city's parking authority (Bílastæðasjóður Reykjavíkur). Zones are marked on street signs and painted on the road:

  • P1 (Red Zone): City center core — most restrictive, often 1 hour maximum during weekday business hours (08:00–18:00). Requires a parking disc (stæðisdiskur) or payment machine.
  • P2 (Orange Zone): Surrounding the city center — 2–4 hours maximum. Same hours as P1.
  • P3 (Green Zone): Outer central areas — up to 4 hours or unlimited in some locations. Metered or disc-based.
  • Blue Zone: Reserved for residents with a local permit. Non-residents parked here will receive a fine.

Parking restrictions typically apply Monday to Saturday, 09:00–18:00. Outside these hours and on Sundays, most central street parking is free and unlimited.

How to Pay for Parking

Parking Meters

Pay-and-display machines are found throughout the center. Most accept Visa and Mastercard contactless payments. Print the receipt and display it on your dashboard — enforcement officers scan the receipt, not just the machine record.

EasyPark App

The EasyPark app is widely used in Iceland and allows payment directly from your phone. Start and stop your parking session via the app — you pay only for exact time used. Download the app before arriving in Iceland as setup requires registration.

Parking Disc (Stæðisdiskur)

In some P1 and P2 areas, a parking disc is required. Set the disc to the time you arrived and display it on the dashboard. Discs are available free of charge at the tourist information office on Aðalstræti, at the City Hall (Ráðhús), and many petrol stations.

Parking Fines

Parking enforcement in Reykjavík is active and fines are sent automatically to vehicle owners and rental companies. Standard fines:

  • Exceeding time limit: 4,000–6,000 ISK
  • Parking in a no-parking zone: 10,000–15,000 ISK
  • Parking in a disabled space without permit: 15,000 ISK
  • Blocking a fire hydrant or bus stop: 15,000 ISK

Rental companies add an administrative handling fee (typically 2,500–5,000 ISK) on top of the fine amount. Pay fines online at the Bílastæðasjóður website or at the City Hall within 14 days to avoid escalation.

Free Parking Options in Reykjavík

Several free or low-cost parking areas are available within walking distance of the city center:

  • Skúlagata car park: Large free surface lot near the old harbour, short walk to the city center
  • Harpa parking garage: Paid but reasonable — 250 ISK per hour, validated if visiting Harpa events
  • Hlemmur area: Free street parking available evenings and weekends within easy walking distance of the city center
  • Öskjuhlíð hill area: Free parking near Perlan, short bus ride or 20-minute walk to center

Winter Parking Considerations

During snowfall and ice events, Reykjavík's Snow Emergency Plan (snjóáætlun) activates. This requires vehicles to be moved from designated snow-clearing routes within 1 hour of notification. The emergency plan is announced on city social media channels and local radio. Vehicles not moved are towed at owner's expense — approximately 35,000–50,000 ISK for towing and storage release.

Electric Vehicle Charging Parking

EV charging bays are found throughout central Reykjavík, operated by various networks. Parking in an EV bay without actively charging is a fineable offense — these bays are not general parking spaces. Check the EV bay's signage for time limits and permitted operator apps.
